Sigtec (Technisyst) to help Melbourne buses run on time

May 2005 - News Article

Brisbane-based mobile data specialist, Technisyst, has beaten a field of local and international competitors to win the Melbourne SmartBus contract. Under the deal, initially worth more than $7M, Technisyst will supply their Intelligent Transport System RAPID across four key bus routes, covering 80 buses, 2 bus depots, 135 on-street displays and traffic light priority through 63 intersections.

The system will operate city-wide, with the capacity in the future to support more than 3,000 buses and 2,000 street information displays. The Technisyst RAPID solution will help make Melbourne bus system more efficient by allowing late running buses to get green lights at intersections, and by displaying up to the minute information to passengers waiting at bus stops advising when their bus will actually arrive.

The new Technisyst system will deliver real advantages for Melbourne bus travellers. Under this system, operators will get real-time information on where the buses are, helping to keep services running smoothly. Passengers will benefit from more buses running on time and they’ll be better informed, thanks to the new electronic information displays.

Technisyst CEO Bill Delaney said the Melbourne SmartBus system would make use of a number of proven Technisyst technologies including advanced communications and Automated Vehicle Location. We have already supplied the Auckland Bus System with similar technology to that used in Melbourne and it is our proven ability to package together world’s best information, computing and technology solutions that sets us apart from our competitors. We are looking forward to working with the Victorian Department of Infrastructure to deliver a truly smart bus system for Melbourne’s commuters.

In August 2007 mobile computing solution firm, Sigtec Group, announced that it had completed a transaction to acquire Brisbane-based Technisyst, in a move that will bring its revenue to more than $35 million and establish it as at the clear leader in the mobile computing market.
